Proper nutrition is not important to athletes in vulnerable communities.
Barbara Yost May 4, 2013 at 02:52 pm
I fail to see what food stamps have anything to do with the Olympics.
Mary May 1, 2013 at 12:01 am
TIL - I nominate you for "Christian Humanitarian" of the Year. I guess you think itRead More better to let children die of malnutrition. Again not on topic as usual.

Good Post, having been a long time Laker fan, since they came to LA. I have seen the Game go fromRead More playing defense to a mostly offensive game only. Scoring has been up this year, it makes for better television. PED's help the players get by the 82 game Sch. and the 30 to 40 more for the playoffs, and also why we see alot more older players in the NBA, Steve Nash just turned 38, and he's plays Point Guard. and he's still playing very well...!!! The money to be made in the NBA is just way to much to really test for PED's. Jerry Buss past away this past week, a great owner will be Missed, He paid'd 98 million for the Lakers in 1979, they are on the Forbes top 10 list for sports teams world wide at # 10 worth 950,million...!!!

There was a time in this country when The Dumb and the Willfully Ignorant worked on assembly linesRead More and wanted nothing more when they got off work other than "Miller Time," a woman with a retarded sense of morality, and a double-wide they could call "home." Then came downsizing, outsourcing, Bush the Second's devaluation of the dollar, and the economic collapse of 2008. Now The Dumb and the Willfully Ignorant are unemployable so they spend their days commenting on the Patch. Even when the article deals with topics they know nothing of; they live to spew their ignorance and hatred. They don't use their real names because they claim speaking your mind can be dangerous. Tell that to Martin Luther King, Jr. Malcolm X, Nathan Hale, Thomas Paine... They are cowards and like all cowards they bully if you point out their complete lack of logic. They ruin online communication and any chance we may have had to learn from each other. They are why the Patch will fail and our society will continue to crumble around us.
Current Events February 17, 2013 at 07:38 am
Wrestling is an origional Olympic event. How can they justiy golf being more of an Olympic eventRead More than wrestling. Ancient Greeks who founded the games must be turning in their graves. Here is a clipping from Olympics from Wikipedia: The Ancient Olympic Games were religious and athletic festivals held every four years at the sanctuary of Zeus in Olympia, Greece. Competition was among representatives of several city-states and kingdoms of Ancient Greece. These Games featured mainly athletic but also combat sports such as wrestling and the pankration, horse and chariot racing events.

Probably not enough diversity in wrestling. We need more basketball and less wrestling. Let'sRead More promote diversity. :^)

How many people normally call in sick on Mondays, regardless of there being a sports event onRead More Sunday? I want to know if 1.5 million sick and 4 million late to work is 10x the normal amount or if it's about average.
Jane Tanaka MD January 29, 2013 at 02:10 am
Ah.. ofcourse! Thank you.
Libi Uremovic January 29, 2013 at 01:50 am
they have two years to file, but that doesn't effect how long the proceedings can drag out...itRead More takes prosecuting attorneys three years to get a court date... ...then both sides start piling on the motions... for the attorney - there's no money in going to court because it takes up too much of their time.....the big bucks are in the paperwork...
Jane Tanaka MD January 28, 2013 at 11:50 pm
Isnt there a statute of limitations of 2 years in a non-medical wrongful death case in the State ofRead More California? The suit was file here in San Diego, per the pdf .

9:43 pm on Sunday, January 27, 2013 Prior to the 2012 Football Season, the American Academy ofRead More Neurology published, in the journal Neurology, a study of 3500 professional football players, and found that professional football players are 4 times as likely to develop ALS ( Lou Gehrig's disease), and also had higher risk of developing Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimers Disease, compared to the general public. Attorneys did not make this up. Its important that parents know this prior to signing up their kids for football.. yes, it can happen even in middle school or high school or college... Its not a laughing matter. If you are a parent who wants your kid to be in football, consider making sure they will be the quarterback or kicker... unless the game changes to reduce repetitive head injuries. Respectfully, Jane Tanaka MD.

Will the "Family of Jr Seau be there at Canton in 2015 when he gets inducted to the Hall ofRead More Fame...? They were there for his Charger induction . Good point about USC and Oceanside High being on the "List" to sue, maybe Popwarner also, or Mom or Dad who drove him to football pactice...!!!

Also different ages, different head injuriy severity risk. Again, per the researchers from theRead More Sports Concussion Instittute: "There are distinct differences in age when it comes to managing sport related concussions. Recent research demonstrates that high school athletes not only take longer to recover after a concussion when compared to collegiate or professional athletes, but they also may experience greater severity of symptoms and more neurological disturbances as measured by neuropsychological and postural stability tests. It is also estimated that 53% of high school athletes have sustained a concussion before participation in high school sports, and 36% of collegiate athletes have a history of multiple concussions. Because the frontal lobes of the human brain continue to develop until age 25, it is vital to manage youth concussions very conservatively to ensure optimal neurological development and outcomes."
Jane Tanaka MD January 12, 2013 at 12:56 pm
Yes, different sports different injuries. According to the Neuropsychologist researchers at theRead More Sports Concussion Institute: "CDC estimates reveal that 1.6 million to 3.8 million concussions occur each year 5-10% of athletes will experience a concussion in any given sport season Fewer than 10% of sport related concussions involve a Loss of Consciousness (e.g., blacking out, seeing stars, etc.) Football is the most common sport with concussion risk for males (75% chance for concussion) Soccer is the most common sport with concussion risk for females (50% chance for concussion) 78% of concussions occur during games (as opposed to practices) Some studies suggest that females are twice as likely to sustain a concussion as males Headache (85%) and Dizziness (70-80%) are most commonly reported symptoms immediately following concussions for injured athletes Estimated 47% of athletes do not report feeling any symptoms after a concussive blow A professional football player will receive an estimated 900 to 1500 blows to the head during a season Impact speed of a professional boxers punch: 20mph Impact speed of a football player tackling a stationary player: 25mph Impact speed of a soccer ball being headed by a player: 70mph"

I agree Margo. I remember going down to Oceanside with my kids for a Parade where he was the GrandRead More Master, along with his beautiful blonde wife. This was a terrible blow to the Samoan community there, as it was to the entire community, friends, family & fans everywhere. What a terrible tragedy. Hope the medical information he left behind will be able to help future athletes avoid the same peril. God Bless Junior Seau and his family.
Andy Arciga December 22, 2012 at 08:23 pm
A lot of no calls by the refs. A late hit on SDSU QB not called. A hit on SDSU reciever's head, notRead More called and SDSU QB arm was clearly going forward and it was called a fumble and BYU TD. Bad play calling by Rocky Long and bad referee's cost SDSU the game.
Pastor Jeff Keck January 14, 2013 at 04:26 pm
Are you kidding me? The "Hall of Fame" was established to honor those who excelled withinRead More the boundaries of this great game. Many current members of the HOF voiced this same opinion...cheaters don't belong. If you want a hall of shame, maybe Las Vegas will pony up the money.
NYsportsfan January 11, 2013 at 09:54 pm
News flash, pal: Steroids were banned by the MLB in 1991. Anyone who has used steroids since then isRead More a cheater and should be labelled as such. Barry Bonds cheated, and never deserves Hall of Fame recognition. Never.
Shane January 11, 2013 at 11:09 am
Ex-Bears coach Lovie Smith will be next Charger coach
ricky hoelck January 10, 2013 at 12:18 pm
Great! The colts are solid and their Defense has always been an aggressive front....When the otherRead More team respects a D and it has the fear factor, aka Steelers.......then we can begin respect...Get rid of 3/4 of the truly "Offensive" O line starting with the slow non intimidating Jeremy Clary....He has been the core softness to the no run Chargers for 4 years......formerCharger tryout player-Ricky Hoelck
Donald Sonck January 9, 2013 at 09:31 pm

True Jay, If they go to L.A. Oakland is looking for a home, Just look around town at the RaiderRead More Nation stickers on local vehicles. They would have a better fan base than the chargers now do to start with ! It could happen ! in the NFL anything is possiable !!!
Jay Berman December 30, 2012 at 03:22 pm

I guess this proves that even creative marketing strategies such as Groupon are no substitute forRead More putting a good product on the field.
Army Grunt December 13, 2012 at 10:19 pm
Fire the front office peronnel, then hire some one that can inspire the players with direction andRead More some "Fire" instead of whimpiness like Norv. Bill Cowher comes to mind, then rebuild O-line with some monsters with legs under them & strength ie Diehlman, Ed White, Louie Kelcher, Walt sweeney....these were knuckle-busters in the day!
