PTA Hosting Forum for School Board Candidates Wednesday

The forum will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Poway Unified School District Offices.

Without U.S. citizenship, Shirley Williams has always relied on the community to make good choices when it comes to electing members of the Poway Unified School District Board of Education.

“Because I don’t vote, I take what I get,” said Williams, an officer for the Palomar Council PTA. "I rely on the community to make the right choices and so far they have.”

The English-born mother of four has watched her children go through Mt. Carmel High School, the youngest currently a sophomore. She says the biggest change she’s seen in the six-year age difference between her youngest and eldest have been the class sizes.

“When the eldest was a freshman in high school, math class was capped at 20 students. We don’t have that luxury now,” Williams said.

She expects this, along with discussions about bond issues, equalization funding, propositions 30 and 38, technology and bullying to be at the forefront of the

Incumbents Linda Vanderveen and Andy Patapow will face off against challenger Kimberley Beatty for the two seats that will be available on the school board come November.

“I expect some searching and intelligent questions and I’m hoping for some thoughtful and meaningful answers from the candidates,” Williams said.

The forum will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Poway Unified School District Offices and will be moderated by The League of Women Voters of San Diego.
