$25K Mt. Carmel High Emergency Pool Project OK'd

Two pool heaters were discovered broken last month.

Poway Unified officials have agreed to spend $25,000 replacing two pool heaters at Mount Carmel High School using an emergency waiver that lets them bypass a public bidding process for the project.

Officials first discovered the “sudden and unexpected breakdown” on Jan. 29, and cited an urgent need for seniors to complete swimming classes to graduate in requesting the emergency waiver to hire Commercial Aquatics.

Public Contract Code requires school boards to invite bids for public projects costing at least $15,000, except in emergency situations—with county and unanimous board approval—that compromise safety or existing classes.
