SD City Council Candidates Begin Taking Out Nomination Papers for June Primary Election

Prospective candidates for City Council offices in the June 3 primary election began taking out nominating papers Wednesday, including Myrtle Cole, who will be seeking reelection in District 4 in Southeast San Diego.

Even-numbered districts will hold elections this year.

In District 2, federal prosecutor Sarah Boot and Libertarian Mark Schwartz took out papers. Councilman Kevin Faulconer, whether or not he wins the mayor's race, will be termed out in December in the district that includes Point Loma and Mission Bay.

Councilwoman Lorie Zapf, who represents District 6 areas like Clairemont Mesa and Mira Mesa, is expected to switch to District 2 for her reelection bid. Because the district maps were redrawn a couple of year's ago, she's actually represented by Faulconer.

Taking out papers for what should be an open District 6 seat were Chris Cate of the San Diego County Taxpayers Association, grant writer Carol Kim, community and veterans activist De Le, former San Diego Unified School District Trustee Mitz Lee, and Keith J. Wong.

Lincoln Pickard, who ran unsuccessfully in the Nov. 19 mayoral special election, took out nominating papers in District 8, which is currently represented by Faulconer's mayoral opponent, David Alvarez. The district covers Barrio Logan and South Bay neighborhoods.

Taking out nominating papers is one of a series of steps candidates need to qualify for the ballot. The candidates have to collect signatures and return the papers on March 6, along with a filing fee.
