Reports: Tony Young Quitting Council to Become Red Cross Chapter CEO

Council President Young would replace Joe Craver, according to several media outlets.

Updated at 11:30 p.m. Nov. 15, 2012

Tony Young will step down from the San Diego City Council to become the CEO of the American Red Cross San Diego-Imperial Counties chapter, according to Voice of San Diego.

“This is a great opportunity to continue to serve the residents of this region in a really special way and I’m really excited about that,” Young was quoted by Voice of San Diego as saying.

Late Thursday night, local Red Cross spokeswoman Courtney Pendleton told Patch: “More details will be sent out from us in the morning as originally planned. But yes, Tony Young is the next CEO for the local Red Cross.”

Voice said the City Charter requires a special election in District 4 within 90 days of Young’s departure.

Young—the current council president who has served since 2004—would replace outgoing CEO Joe Craver.

An earlier report of the CEO move was posted on the San Diego Business Journal website Thursday night and credited to “SDBJ Staff Report.” And U-T San Diego reported that a formal announcement is planned Friday. The paper said it confirmed the move with a spokeswoman for Young.

The local Red Cross chapter’s website has no announcement about Young. Neither does Young on his 4th District council homepage.

The 4th District comprises the neighborhoods of southeast San Diego, including Oak Park, Chollas View, Enerald Hills, Mount Hope, Lincoln Park and Paradise Hills.

Regarding Patch's response to this comment: A 'typo' is when someone hits the wrong key on theRead More keyboard, like typing "Democrut" or "Demacrat." Calling a Democrat a Republican is a MISTAKE and party affiliation is very easy to check check these days. Maybe this is just a "blog," I'm not sure. But if it's a "news site", and the people writing stories are purporting to be "journalists" or "reporters" could easily do better and should do so. Let's not minimize a factual error in a "news" story as a "typo."
