RB Planning Board Recognizes Design, New Board Member

Thursday's meeting also address parking concerns, high-speed rail and the welcome sign.

Highlights from the Rancho Bernardo Planning Board meeting on Thursday:

  • Election Results: Fewer than 50 votes were cast in the election, in which only one race was contested, board members said. Plans to bring on the lone new member—Alissa Messian—were tabled in a special meeting that followed the regular gathering, amid debate about the board's bylaws. Parliamentarian Joe Dirks said the bylaws stipulate that the new board takes over at the April meeting. Board chair Teri Denlinger said she couldn't recall the board ever waiting until April. The agenda was tabled as a result. San Diego City planning officials could not immediately be reached for comment by the end of business Friday.
  • Traffic: The board approved a three-way stop sign at Matinal and Florindo roads in Westwood due to residents' concerns about speeding. Plans for high-speed rail running through RB also were discussed, with some expressing concern about the noise, dust kickup and design.
  • Welcome Sign: The runoff voting will take place online-only from March 24-April 7 at RefreshRB.com. The traditional design (Concept C) which got the most votes in the initial voting, will go up against a new contemporary design that will be unveiled Monday. Whichever sign receives the most votes will win, the committee has decided. The winner will then go to the Planning Board and RB Community Council for final approval. • Second Annual Meritorious Design Awards: San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio, who represents Rancho Bernardo in District 5, was on hand to present the awards, which recognized good local design and events. Winners:

    • Johnson Residence: Rick and Erin Johnson — The home in the Trails was constructed in the craftsman style, a departure from typical local design that "adds to our architectural diversity."
    • Landscape Design: Fire Station No. 33 — "It is designed for low water use and fully utilizes its footprint."
    • Community Event: Bernardo Winery/Certified Farmers Market — "It helps provide a sense of community" and a place for people to buy crafts and food.
    • Community Event: Rancho Bernardo Business Association/Webb Park Certified Farmers Market — "It provides a casual environment for people to gather and enjoy our community."
