Navy Suspends Helicopter Drone Flights After Crashes

The Fire Scout drones were developed by Rancho Bernardo engineers.

The United States Navy has suspended flights of MQ-8B Fire Scout unmanned helicopters after a pair of crashes at sea and in Afghanistan, it was announced Tuesday.

The helicopter drones, which were first deployed to war zones in Afghanistan and Libya last year, were developed by Northrop Grumman Corp. engineers in Rancho Bernardo, according to the Los Angeles Times.

In a statement, Navy officials said no personnel were injured in the two crashes on March 30 and April 6. Fourteen air vehicles will be grounded while the Navy investigates.
