Labor Council Endorses Peters for Congress, Filner for Mayor

The council said Rep. Bob Filner is "hands down" the best candidate for San Diego's next mayor.

The San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council on Wednesday announced its endorsement of Scott Peters for the new 52nd congressional district, and Rep. Bob Filner for mayor of San Diego.

“Scott Peters is a problem solver who knows how to create good, middle-class jobs—a skill that is sorely needed in Washington, D.C.,” Lorena Gonzalez, secretary-treasurer/CEO of the Labor Council, said in a statement. “He has demonstrated a history of bringing people together and getting things done for San Diegans.”

Peters, a Democrat who lives in La Jolla, is a former San Diego City Council president and current chairman of the San Diego Unified Port District. He is up against Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-Solana Beach) and former Democratic state assemblywoman Lori Saldaña.

In the mayor's race, Filner, a Democrat, faces off against San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio, Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher (R-San Diego) and San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis.

“Congressman Filner is hands-down, the best choice for hardworking folks in San Diego—both union and non-union,” Gonzalez said in a statement. “He’ll put an end to the ideological war on workers that has come from extreme right-wing politicians, and focus on putting our city back to work.”
