District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis Joins Race for Mayor

Dumanis was elected to the District Attorney's Office in 2003.

San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis announced Thursday that she will join the race for mayor in 2012.

"Our city is obviously at a crucial moment in its history. I get it. People are fed up with unsustainable pensions, a lack of transparency and political infighting. Many San Diegans are still hurting as we struggle to rebound from the recession," Dumanis said in an e-mail to supporters.

Dumanis was elected to the District Attorney's Office in 2003. In her letter, Dumanis said she will approach change in City Hall like she approached change in the DA's Office.

"In many ways, it's simple—dispense with the vitriol, name-calling and "us against them" mentality and make sure all voices are heard. As long as we take sides in what has become a war on how to handle our financial crisis in San Diego, all of us lose," Dumanis said.

Councilman Carl DeMaio, who represents Rancho Bernardo in District 5, announced his in January. Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher (R-San Diego), who also represents RB, is another person many expect to run. A Fletcher spokesperson said he is "strongly considering the opportunity" and has received lots of encouragement.
