Deputy Sheriffs Endorse Fletcher for Mayor

Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher picked up an endorsement in the San Diego mayoral race Thursday from the San Diego County Deputy Sheriffs Association, which cited his independence and ability to work across the political spectrum for public safety.

Fletcher recently shook up the mayoral campaign by leaving the Republican Party and becoming independent, a move that generated publicity and campaign donations.

DSA President Dave Schaller said Fletcher's ability to pass Chelsea's Law, which tightened scrutiny of sex offenders, was an impressive accomplishment.

"Many said passing sweeping public safety reform would be impossible, but Nathan proved them wrong," Schaller said. "We know he will bring that same energy and drive to the mayor's office, and we look forward to working with him."

The DSA -- which represents about 2,000 sheriff's department employees -- joins the San Diego Police Officers Association, San Diego County Probation Officers Association and several other law enforcement groups in endorsing Fletcher.

He faces Councilman Carl DeMaio, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and Rep. Bob Filner, D-San Diego, in the June 5 primary election. If no one gets more than 50 percent, the top two vote-getters will compete in November's general election.
