The crash happened late Friday morning in Black Mountain Ranch, police said.

Updated at 4:10 p.m. Saturday.

An SUV struck a nanny pushing a baby carriage in a crosswalk on a Black Mountain Ranch street Friday, killing her and injuring the 13-month-old boy strapped in the stroller, authorities reported.

The Medical Examiner’s Office identified her as Monserrat Mendez, 41, of San Diego.

The accident at Camino del Sur and Via Verrazzano happened about 11:45 a.m., according to San Diego police.

Medics took Mendez to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where she was pronounced dead. The toddler was taken to Rady Children's Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, including scrapes and bruises, SDPD public-affairs Lt. Andra Brown said.

The motorist, a woman in her 20s, was uninjured, though her Toyota 4Runner sustained heavy damage.

It was not immediately clear who was at fault for the crash, Brown said.
