A motorcyclist suffered serious injuries Sunday morning when he struck a tree in the Rancho Bernardo area while speeding, a San Diego police officer said.

The accident was reported at 1 a.m. at Highland Valley and Sycamore Creek roads, said San Diego police Officer David Stafford.

"A male motorcyclist in his early 20s was riding on 12900 Highland Valley Road at an unsafe speed. As he rode into a curve he lost control of the bike and struck a tree," Stafford said. "He suffered a broken collar bone and open fractures in both arms."

The man was transported to a trauma center, the sergeant said. Alcohol was not a factor.
