Car Hits Man in the Middle of the Street, Flees

Police said the man had been drinking.

A 21-year-old man who had been drinking and was walking around in the middle of the street Monday night was hit by a driver, who then took off without stopping to help, police said.

The accident happened on the 12400 block of Carmel Mountain Road at Rancho Carmel Drive around 7:45 p.m. Monday, San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros and a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department dispatcher said.

The 21-year-old man had been walking southbound in northbound lanes when he headed west and was hit by a vehicle, possibly a small white sedan, Delimitros said.

The man had been drinking and suffered a lacerated liver, the officer said.

The man was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, the dispatcher said, though the officer said the injuries were not considered life-threatening.
