Issue: Should State Find Another Fix for Prisons, Halt Inmate Dumps?

Federal decision could send up to 800 additional prisoners from overcrowded state facilities into San Diego County by the end of the year.

The county Board of Supervisors registered its opposition Tuesday to a recent federal decision that could send up to 800 additional prisoners from overcrowded state facilities into San Diego County by the end of the year.

Following Gov. Jerry Brown’s signing of AB 109, the Public Safety Realignment Act of 2011, some prisoners who were convicted of a nonviolent crime or a non-sex offense were shifted from state to county facilities and probation departments.

Is it time for Sacramento to find another way to deal with prison crowding?  Or should counties share the burden of housing inmates as a way of saving taxpayer dollars and meeting federal demands? Share your thoughts in the comments.
