Issue: Is Bob Filner Toast as an Effective Mayor Amid Scandals?

Democratic Party county chair Francine Busby said: "I take allegations of sexual harassment very seriously, as does the Democratic Party."

Bob Filner’s problems exploded Wednesday when two Democratic allies alleged the 70-year-old San Diego mayor was guilty of sexual harassment or at least “inexcusable behavior” involving his staff. They and others are calling for his resignation.

Democratic Party county chair Francine Busby added a statement:  “I take allegations of sexual harassment very seriously, as does the Democratic Party. The information currently available about these claims is not specific, and key questions remain to be answered both by Mayor Filner and those leveling these charges.”

And San Diego Councilman Kevin Faulconer  said: “It saddens me that the city of San Diego is crumbling under Mayor Filner’s scandals, including these most recent sexual misconduct allegations. These allegations are very serious and Bob Filner owes the public a full explanation.”

Earlier criticism of Filner might be chalked up to sour grapes by downtown interests and conservative media, but when Democrats voice concern, his status becomes iffy. Is he wounded enough to consider resignation? Or can he answer his latest critics and continue to be an effective mayor? Share your thoughts in the comments.
