Jack Mitchell Dies at 93; Noted Musician Composed ‘Rancho Bernardo High’

Memorial service for both Jack and late wife Harriet will be May 5 at Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church.

John Harrison “Jack” Mitchell—a renowned trumpet player who composed Rancho Bernardo High among other songs—died March 14 of myelodysplasia and complications from a fall after the 2011 death of his wife, Harriet, according to U-T San Diego obituary.

He was 93.

“After retiring from [The Prairie School in Racine, WI] in 1978, Jack worked for S.C. Johnson in corporate giving and executive management training,” the obituary said. “Jack and Harriet moved to Rancho Bernardo in 1985. Jack was actively involved in the Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club, Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church, Symphony on the Green, Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation, and other activities.”

A memorial service for both Jack and Harriet is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church.
