Don't Stress During Finals or an Exam at School

Tips for taking exams. 10 easy ways to do better on their exams and in school. Brainy Learning Center can provide additional support for Pre-K through College in all subjects.

It is important to remember not to stress out during finals, the end of a quarter, trimester, or semester.  Being relaxed and calm during your exams can affect your perception of the exam and your grades.  

It is important to take time for yourself.  

Here are some tips:

1) Study each subject in 20-30 minute blocks.  For example, math = 20 minutes, reading =20 minutes, then go back and study math for 20 minutes more and the same for reading.  Do this with all subjects.  Studies show that the mind can only take in so much information at once within a 20-30 minute time block.  This helps a person retain more information in less time.  Space out your study time. 

2) Take a 5-10 minute break between subjects.  Make sure you rest, use the restroom, get a snack, and/or exercise (run in place - it can help you to reset yourself).

3) During exam week, do not watch TV or play video games.  

4) Listen to classical music.  Mozart and Beethoven have positive effects on learning.  

5) Eat properly throughout the day.  A well-balanced meal give the brain and body energy you need to function throughout the day.

6) Get plenty of sleep.

7) Study in advance.  Cramming usually isn't that effective, unless you already know the material well.  

8) Take time for yourself to do something fun.  Exercise, play outside, hang out with your friends, and the possibilities are limitless. 

9) Make notes (Cornell Notes, note cards, etc.) – we can help at Brainy Learning Center. 

10) Don't stress!  You always have a new report card season to improve.
