Wisdom My Father Gave Me

My father was not one for waiting. He may have seemed impatient to many people but his thought process was clear: Why keep waiting for someday when someday may never come?

My father was a very smart man of very few words. So I did not learn from him so much by what he said as by what he did.

My aunts were the complete opposite of my father. It is interesting how different siblings can be. For example, they would use their good china just on holidays. Some dishes were never ever used, and they spent their entire existence on a shelf, where guests could look at them but not touch them. My aunts were “saving them for someday.”

This was a foreign language to my dad. He believed in living life to the fullest, doing what makes you happy, enjoying your family and friends, and not waiting.

My dad fit a lot of living into his 65 years on the planet. Recently, with the tragedy in Newtown, I was reminded of how wise he was. I will never wait for someday, because someday may never come.

If I want to take a trip with my family, I will do it. If I want to renovate my kitchen, I will do it. If I want to snowboard, I will do it. I will never wait, because the “perfect time” or “best date” or “optimal circumstances” may never arrive.

Everybody’s goals are different, and different things make different people happy. But waiting never makes anyone happy. Doing makes you happy. That is the beauty of life.
