Fletcher Scores More Endorsements in San Diego Mayor's Race

Former assemblyman Nathan Fletcher on Wednesday received endorsements for his San Diego mayoral campaign from several Barrio Logan community leaders, taking another nibble from the perceived power base of a major opponent, Councilman David Alvarez.

The support for Fletcher in the Nov. 19 special election comes from community activist and Barrio Station director Rachael Ortiz; Gus Chavez, a veteran and educator who co-founded the MAAC project, Barrio Station, the Chicano Federation and Logan Heights Family Health Center; Carlos Casteneda, a Barrio Logan resident for nearly 50 years; and Saida Soto, co-owner of the New Mexico Cafe/La Dona Restaurant.

They said Fletcher would lead initiatives that would benefit Barrio Logan, including creating jobs that pay a livable wage and investing in neighborhoods.

"We need a mayor who will bring people together to get thing done and who will respect the work of neighborhood leaders," Ortiz said. "We've seen our options, and we're happy to support Nathan Fletcher for mayor."

They join several Latino elected officials who have chosen to endorse Fletcher over Alvarez, who represents Barrio Logan and South San Diego neighborhoods. The list includes Rep. Juan Vargas, D-San Diego; Assembly Speaker John Perez, D-Los Angeles; Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego; and Escondido Deputy Mayor Olga Diaz.

The Alvarez campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

He recently helped usher a controversial update of the neighborhood's community plan through the City Council, which sought to provide separation between residents and industry. The plan had been opposed by business groups.

Fletcher and Alvarez are among 11 candidates hoping to finish the term of Bob Filner, who resigned Aug. 30 amid a sexual harassment scandal. The field also includes former City Attorney Mike Aguirre and Councilman Kevin Faulconer.
