What You Need to Know for Memorial Day

Here's a look at what's open and closed for the holiday.

It has been 41 years since Memorial Day officially became a national holiday, recognized on the last Monday of every month with a special moment of silence for lost soldiers and troops at 3 p.m. local time.

But, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the first form of the holiday was in 1868 as Decoration Day on May 30, a time to decorate the graves of those who had died at war.

Groups across San Diego County will be honoring the nation's service members throughout the day: .
