West Bernardo Drive Now Reopened

City crews have been constructing a pedestrian-bike path along the road for the past year and a half.

City crews reopened the westbound portion of West Bernardo Drive just before noon Friday after putting the finishing touches on a new pedestrian-bike path.

Westbound drivers had been detoured onto Pomerado Road and Escala Drive while the project was being completed.

The project has taken about a year and a half due to delays, a city engineer said. The crews have installed about 2,400 feet of sidewalk and cantilever on West Bernardo Drive starting at Interstate 15 and going up near Rancho Bernardo Community Park.

Pedestrians and bicyclists previously had little room to navigate the road, creating a hazardous situation. On Friday morning, workers were painting a stripe down the brown colored sidewalk to divide the space for pedestrians and bicyclists. Several people were already jogging along the new stretch.

Crews also resurfaced the David Kreitzer Lake Hodges Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge. A couple of benches also have been installed along the path.

Crews will still have to finish some landscaping and revegetation along the path after the road opens to drivers.
