U-T San Diego Formally Endorses Romney; More Big Papers Back Obama

By one count, 36 of the 100 largest U.S. newspapers have backed president; 27 for Romney.

U-T San Diego on Saturday formally endorsed Mitt Romney for president with a 785-word editorial titled Bring in the turnaround expert: The case for Romney.

“More so than any presidential candidate in memory, Romney is credible when he makes the case that the best way to control debt isn’t just by cutting spending, it’s by creating a roaring, revenue- and job-creating economy,” said the editorial posted about 6 p.m.

The editorial board of the U-T said of President Obama: “His policies have not revived the economy; the massive $800 billion stimulus he orchestrated hasn’t come close to delivering on his promises. And Obama’s disengaged leadership style hasn’t just alienated business leaders.”

The move was not unexpected.

Over the past several months, the newspaper has made other pitches for the Republican nominee and criticized the incumbent Democrat. This included a July 22 editorial calling Barack Obama the worst president in American history.

According to a recent report in The Associated Press, U-T publisher Doug Manchester “invested in San Diego-area resident Dinesh D'Souza's hit documentary, 2016: Obama’s America, which portrays a gloomy future if the president is re-elected, according to the paper’s CEO, [John] Lynch.”

The U-T gave the movie wide exposure via a series of full-page ads—which some critics say were free ads.

According to a scorecard kept by the American Presidency Project, 36 of the largest 100 newspapers in the United States have endorsed Obama, 27 back Romney, 13 are making no pick and two are undecided or neutral. Others have yet to announce.

In total circulation, papers endorsing Obama have close to 9.3 million subscribers and Romney backers boast 5.5 million, said the site based at UC Santa Barbara.

The U-T Editorial board is made up of longtime U-T editorial editor William Osborne; editorial writer Chris Reed, formerly of the Orange County Register; editorial cartoonist and Pulitzer Prize winner Steve Breen; Community Opinion Editor Blanca Gonzalez; and letters editor Joe Taylor.

Um...I think you mean slanted to the right!

An endorsement by the U-T is very helpful. It's the clearest indicator to vote for the other person. In new District 50, the U-T endorses Duncan Hunter for Congress. I'm his opponent. Hunter has been in seclusion since his feelings were hurt, forcing him to bow out of our debate that had been set for October 23rd. You don't often see a Marine officer refuse to carry out a mission, hide in his quarters and refuse to come out until his dad tells him it's safe (which will likely be November 6th, after the polls close). Catch him looking sober and dignified on TV at "Election Central" Tuesday night. You will hear how "JOBS" will be his top priority in the new Congress. It was his top priority in his 2010 as well. Somehow he managed to do nothing about jobs in those 2 years. He's not particularly worried. He's a "Duncan Hunter." His job is safe - that's what counts. The Republican and Democratic parties both agree (Dems did not put up a candidate to oppose him. That's why I entered the race). And now the U-T endorses Hunter. Both parties and the U-T see it the same way. I do not. But unless some Real Republicans who believe a woman must make her own healthcare decisions without federal interference, who don't believe there were dinosaurs on Noah's Ark, who don't see gay marriage as the end of the world, and who understand that climate change is real, unless conscience demands they refuse to vote (R) as they normally would, its a done deal.

MH/RP - Your comments show how little you know about Islam! I've read the Book of Mormon and have known many Mormons personally - good people, every one! I find some of their beliefs odd - such as not using any drugs (not even caffeine) and treating their bodies as temples (what's the fun in that?) - but none as odd as Islamic Jihadists who want to convert or kill non-believers! Obama vilifies Republicans as waging war against women (because we want to protect the unborn) and yet Islam's Sharia law places women in a position as slaves to men! Reallllly? ... you apologists for Islam don't get it! With Islam it is about world domination - not live and let live. As Europe has experienced, Muslims are only peaceful and respectful of the laws, religions, culture and lives of others until they have the majority and the power, then out go the bastions of any civility or liberty or equality. Do you think it is only coincidence that 8 years after waging war against Islamic Extremism we now have a president who refuses to utter the phrase? Who was brought up as Muslim? Who only pays lip service to being an ally and protector of Israel? Who was mentored by Communist anarchists? Who as part of a bi-partisan congress voted FOR devastating legislation that caused the mess he accuses Bush of leaving him to fix? Who has actively deceived and cheated his way into the White House? Wake the F*C* UP America - throw this Islamic Communist out of OUR White House!

David, it is good to see your post! I'm pretty certain that Duncan Hunter has never commented on any article in the Patch and may not even know that it exists. I have not met you, but I am one of the few Dems in our town and I back you 100%. I truly hope that you, along with President Barack Obama, win the election. Lord help us if you don't. Fingers crossed!!!

Robert (you are a lot more like Pat Paulson) just as dumb. You really don't get it do you? No surprise, simple minds like yours are like that.

I'm not in your district but I wish you the best of luck. How do we get rid of Issa. I can't believe these idiots in the North County that have kept him in office. He is disgusting.

Glenn Beck is a domestic terrorist and is the top Imam in the American Taliban. The Blaze is their National Mosque. He is guilty of treason and should be sent to Guantanamo Bay.
Robert Paulson November 05, 2012 at 04:59 PM
Wow! War mongers for Romney. I'm not only surprised, I'm shocked. Who would have thought that those that make their living killing people, many of them innocent civilians and ignorant cannon fodder, would be for Romney.

500 Retired Generals, Admirals support -ending Social Security and Medicare (they don't need them), -cutting workers' wages, hours and benefits (they don't care they're retired, and many granted phony 100% disability ("Thanks, taxpayers!"), -keeping nation at state of "permanent war" (they won't be going, and most are lobbyists for Pentagon contractors, getting even MORE taxpayer dollars). -increasing defense spending that's already 10 times what China is spending. -cutting Medicaid, though more 85% of Medicaid dollars go to elderly in rest homes, the disabled and children, -ignoring infrastructure in favor of defense spending, even though China spends 15% of GDP on infrastructure, while U.S. spends 2.5%. -adhering to contract with Grover Norquist over contract with the people. -ending regulation of multi-national corporations and too-big-to-fail banks (retirees can't remember 2008 crash) -bombing Iran and immediately raising U.S. gasoline prices to $6 per gallon and $8-$10 within a week. When this gang of retired generals and admirals, most Pentagon lifers, go-along-to-get-along crawling up the promotion ladder over your dead body self-absorbed opportunists endorses Mr. Romney you know you should vote for the other guy.

Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh...all very frightening. Truly sorry you are in Issa's district. Lived there for several years, so I empathize. All we can hope is that women (and intelligent men) see through the misogynistic rhetoric that the GOP continuously spews and vote for the good guys...the candidates who are on their side. I fear Americans will be thrown back to the Dark Ages if they don't.

Kev Geo - Here's the story on why Obama failed in his two year effort to close Guantanamo Bay http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/guantanamo-bay-how-the-white-house-lost-the-fight-to-close-it/2011/04/14/AFtxR5XE_story.html President Obama put two years into his effort so you can't really say he didn't try. Your posting of the Youtube video is just a continuation of your attempt to color the truth about President Obama. FAIL. Well, you are going to have to live with it for four more years and Romney won't have to fulfill ALL of his promises of things he will do on DAY ONE. I'm sure you've heard Romney say he will get rid of "Obamacare" on day one. We all know that's not going to happen either. He will need the cooperation of Congress and he's not going to get it. http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/420362/october-18-2012/mitt-s-first-day

Kevin George - get real and don't be such an ignorant smart ass. Oh, that's right. Being an ignorant smart ass is your raison d'etre. He did everything he could to close Guantanamo. It's just one more thing the obstructionist Republican Party of NO prevented in their attempts to destroy him. http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/guantanamo-bay-how-the-white-house-lost-the-fight-to-close-it/2011/04/14/AFtxR5XE_story.html

the fight over gitmo was perhaps the clearest indication that the republicans in the house are willing to do ANYTHING to block ANY part of the president's agenda.. there was absolutely NO legitimate reason to keep that gitmo facility open..they blocked it simply.. and ONLY.. to hamstring the president.. doug

Now they are doing everything they can to obstruct the people's right to vote. People standing in long lines for hours on end. We have a suprise for them....we will not give up the fight and President Obama will be the true winner.
Robert Paulson November 06, 2012 at 01:49 AM
Doug - I wasn't looking for this as I was done with it after my post to Kev Geo but just found this from 10/19/2012. He's still working on it; "President Obama was on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart and (drum roll please) he talked about civil liberties issues! He said, “There are some things that we haven't gotten done. I still want to close Guantanamo. We haven’t been able to get that through Congress,” and that what “we have got to do is put a legal architecture in place and we need congressional help do that.”
Robert Paulson November 06, 2012 at 01:56 AM
RATSJ - Obama is the projected winner but I'm very concerned about the unknown effect on voting from hurricane Sandy, the ongoing attempts to disenfranchise Democrat voters with voter ID laws and the very real danger of voter fraud in swing states on behalf of Rmoney. There is a real danger that the effect of these multiple threats to our democracy will turn the tables on a legitimate election.
CallmeLefty November 06, 2012 at 02:08 AM
Robert and Doug, thank you for explaining the Guantanamo issue to Kev Geo. I apologize for not making myself clear. Watched the Daily Show as well and heard the same as you. Kev Geo: Giving you the benefit of the doubt, you may not have seen Jon Stewart or know of his show. Turn your television channel off Fox and on to just about any other channel for more neutral information. For myself, I choose not to have television cable channels. My family gets all of our information from various and multiple websites.
Things I Learned November 06, 2012 at 02:33 AM
I thought voter fraud didn't exist I should watch more Jon Stewart then I would know that Republicans were so powerful in Barack Obamacare's first two years that he couldn't get anything done. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/111th_United_States_Congress#Health_care_reform
Robert Paulson November 06, 2012 at 06:21 AM
TIL - You don't need to watch Jon Stewart. All you need to do is carefully remove your head from your rectum. You, Kev Geo, Batshit and Ecklund all suffer from the same malady, NPD. It's particularly promenant among Conservatives, Evangelical Christians, TEA Party members and other right wing radicals fooled into thinking they know everything and have all the answers because they watch Fox News, read Papa's UT, and listen to Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, and Michael Savage. There is hope for you but you need to act NOW or the reelection of Barack Obama may cause your head to explode.
RATSJ November 06, 2012 at 06:59 AM
Repugnators will do anything to get Mittens elected, but the dirty tactics may backfire on them. Happy voting day everyone!
