Two Dozen Drivers Arrested in St. Patrick's Day DUI Patrols

Officers set up a checkpoint in Mission Bay and screened more than 1,400 drivers.

San Diego police arrested two dozen drivers on suspicion of drunken driving on St. Patrick's Day through a checkpoint and saturation patrols, officials announced Monday.

One arrested driver also was charged with possession of a controlled substance for sale, and transportation of narcotics, according to a news release.

The checkpoint, held at 4300 Mission Bay Dr., resulted in 19 DUI arrests, 17 impounded vehicles and the felony narcotics charge. Thirty additional drivers were detained for sobriety evaluations but not arrested. Officers screened more than 1,400 vehicles at the checkpoint.

Other officers, in a DUI saturation patrol, also arrested five drivers in the Pacific Beach, Mission Beach and Gaslamp Quarter areas. Saturation patrol officers also issued 37 citations, conducted 12 roadside DUI evaluations and impounded three vehicles.

The checkpoint and patrols were funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
