How Much Would You Pay for a Gallon of Gas?

Patch asks locals what they'd be willing to pay for gas before they took action—their answers may surprise you.

Gas prices are always a concern in Southern California. Prices are constantly increasing and causing all of our wallets to be a bit lighter.

Patch went to the Chevron gas station at 16757 Bernardo Center Dr. on March 6 and asked some residents (and one commuter) how much they'd be willing to pay for a gallon of gas before they took action—stopped driving, took public transportation or cut back on their travels.

Rancho Bernardo resident Roger Rix, who drives an Acura and requires to fill his vehicle with premium gas, said $5 is where his limit is.

"I wouldn't stop driving, but I would drive a lot less," if gas reached $5, Rix said.

But another resident, Lisa Clarke, said she'd be willing to shell out a Hamilton for a gallon a gas.

"I'd pay up to $9 or $10," the RB resident said, who drives a Mazda that also takes premium gas. "I like to drive... It would hurt, but I'd pay. I'm lucky to have the luxury of being able to pay that."

Of course, some people are lucky enough to not have gas prices affect their wallets. Theresa Riley, who lives in Temecula but was visiting RB, said she couldn't give a figure because she doesn't have to pay for her own gas.

"I've always had a company card," Riley told Patch. "I'm very grateful. My husband and I are very lucky."

The Chevron station Patch visited was selling gas for the following prices on March 6:

  • $4.29—regular
  • $4.39—plus
  • $4.49—supreme

So we ask you now: What's the highest price you're willing to pay for a gallon of gas? What would you do if gas prices hit that mark?
