Council to Declare Northrop Grumman Week

The San Diego City Council is set to declare Northrop Grumman Week in the City of San Diego in recognition of the defense contractor's contribution to the local economy.

"It's no secret that Northrop Grumman helps drive our local economy and bolster national defense," Councilman Mark Kersey said in a statement.

Kersey represents District 5 which includes Rancho Bernardo, where Northrop Grumman recently relocated 300 jobs from out of state for the Unmanned Systems Center for Excellence. The company employs 3,800 people in the San Diego area with an annual economic impact of $607 million, according to an announcement from Kersey's office.

"The decision to transition all of our unmanned aircraft system programs, management and development efforts to one site has many benefits," Jim Zortman, sector vice president and San Diego site manager for Northrop Grumman, said in a statement. "It reinforces our company's commitment to this viable market and enables our team to increase efficiencies, performance and innovation to address the needs of our domestic and international customers."

Kersey said the council is also spotlighting the company for what it does in the community.

"We also wanted to recognize how much they do in the community and to keep us safe at home. During the [2007] wildfires, Northrop Grumman's unmanned aerial vehicle imagery was used to help CalFire determine which direction the fire was moving. That partnership saved property and lives," Kersey said.

The proclamation declaring Northrop Grumann Week is scheduled to presented at 10 a.m. Tuesday in council chambers.
