Border Patrol Vehicle Among 100 Rainy Day Crashes Wednesday

Another day of rain created hazardous conditions on local roads.

The California Highway Patrol reported more than 100 crashes just after midday Wednesday as the rain continued to fall, including one involving a Border Patrol agent.

More rain could come to Rancho Bernardo this weekend.

By 2 p.m. Wednesday, there were 101 crashes reported on San Diego County freeways and unincorporated streets, according to the CHP. Earlier in the day, a 28-year-old U.S. Border Patrol Agent crashed head-on into a 43-year-old man traveling in the opposite direction east of Otay Lakes on Interstate 94 after losing control on the rain-slicked road. Both the agent and the man were injured, according to a CHP news release.

That accident—around 6:30 a.m.—came during an hour when 35 crashes were reported, the most in an hour by 2 p.m. About 0.4 inches of rain fell in Rancho Bernardo during Tuesday's storms, according to the National Weather Service, with more showers possible late Wednesday afternoon and this weekend.

Safety officials recommend that drivers slow down and leave extra room behind vehicles to help prevent crashes on the wet roads.
