Donations are still being accepted and new participants are still welcome to join, the chairman said.

These are some of the stories behind the 2011 Rancho Bernardo Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society set for Saturday and Sunday in Rancho Bernardo Community Park, 18448 West Bernardo Dr.

For 24 hours, teams celebrate cancer survivors and remember of those who have passed away by walking, running and a special ceremony. The Luminaria Ceremony on Saturday night, with illuminated bags representing those who have had cancer, is typically one of the most emotional portions of the event.

This will be the third year for RB's Relay for Life, and so far there are 146 participants and 14 teams. About $20,000 has been raised so far, said event chairman Mike Freet.

In January, RB Relay for Life held a kickoff event at the Ed Brown Senior Center, where survivors, friends and family members shared their stories and struggles. Several Rancho Bernardo High School also were on hand to lend their services.
