15 Ways to Have a Healthy Summer in San Diego

From outdoor fitness activities to ditching the lemonade and slathering on the sunblock, Jaime's guide to looking good and feeling great.

What’s better than a San Diego summer? How about a healthy San Diego summer?

It’s safe to say that while , Daisy Dukes and teeny tiny tanks are in season, we all want to feel and look our best. That goes for the foods we eat, protecting our bodies from harm and even our own general peace of mind. The next few months in Southern California are what the rest of the world are drooling over. Read on to make sure this summer is the healthiest one yet.

  1. If you’re trying to watch your calorie intake, don't drink lemonade, sweetened tea or other sodas in disguise.
  2. Buy . In fact, try joining a local CSA. It’s a great way to try new things.
  3. Swim! With zero impact on the body, it’s a great way to incorporate cardio and resistance training.
  4. Make it a point to get outside every day. Even a 15-minute walk during your break at work will wake you up and get those endorphins flowing.
  5. Be the one to bring a healthy dish to summer potlucks. Let someone else feel guilty for bringing the salty, sugary, fatty dish.
  6. Instead of sitting inside watching the game, head to Petco Park.  Just five bucks gets you in the park. Pack your own food and drinks, have a picnic under the stars with the family. Hey guys, this is a cool, cheap date, too. Bring her flowers, be a hero.
  7. Apply sunscreen every day before you leave the house. Smear that stuff on all exposed (and even unexposed) parts of your body. FYI, T-shirts are only SPF 15 or less. Yes, the sun gets through that thin layer of cotton you’re wearing.
  8. Create a garden. An entire field or just a few herbs, gardening not only relieves stress and burns calories, you’ll never have fresher, tastier food than from your own dirt.
  9. Go for a hike! Hiking is killer for your legs. Remember, your legs are huge muscles, so when they work, you burn mad amounts of calories. Woo hoo! But watch for snakes in the area.
  10. Incorporate at least one physical activity every weekend. San Diego weather is on our side, so no excuses!
  11. When you grill, make enough for lunch the next day.
  12. Protect your eyes, wear sunglasses. Renee Zellweger can pull off squinty eyes, but you probably can’t.
  13. Join a team recreational league. Keeps you active and committed. VAVI is fun, with too many options to count. Check them out.
  14. Workout outside. Ditch the gym once in a while. Look for outdoor group fitness classes.  Inexpensive and fun.
  15. Check out new areas in San Diego County. Summertime is a good time to explore your community and learn a few things while you’re at it.
