$100 Coupons Offered to Keep Kitty Count Down

San Diego County is offering coupons to spay cats in February while they are "in heat."

The County and six participating cities are offering residents $100 coupons to spay cats during the month of February to prevent unwanted kittens.

Cats as young as four to five months old go into heat in February and March and when spring arrives so do the kittens.

“We can’t adopt ourselves out of this huge problem. There simply are not enough families looking to adopt a new cat or kitten,” said Animal Services Director Dawn Danielson. “They come in all shapes, sizes, colors and personalities. They all have one thing in common. They are homeless.”

Many veterinarians throughout the county accept the $100 coupons. The Animal Services website also lists veterinarians who will perform the surgery at a reduced cost. If the coupon is taken to one of the listed veterinarians, the entire cost of the surgery may be met.

The coupons are available to residents of the unincorporated areas of the County and the cities of Carlsbad, Del Mar, Encinitas, Solana Beach, San Diego and Santee. The $100 coupon is available the month of February while supplies last. After that time, the amount of the coupon may be reduced.

The coupons are available at the three County Animal Shelters, located in Mission Valley, Bonita or Carlsbad. Eligible residents can also call the department at 619-767-2675 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
