 (Sacramento, CA - March 3, 2014)

"As the April 15th tax deadline nears, Californians can have a positive impact on their communities by "checking off" contribution boxes on their tax returns," stated Governor Brown in his message for Checkoff California Month. "The people of our State have contributed over $20 million in the past five years, and this generosity has made a real difference in the lives of our fellow Californians."

California is one of many states that allow taxpayers to make a voluntary, tax-deductible contribution to one or more worthwhile causes in the "Contributions" section of their state tax return. In 2013, more than 350,000 Californians checked off their favorite cause on the state tax form 540, raising over $4.5 million.

The twenty funds participating in the Checkoff program are: the California Fund for Senior Citizens, Emergency Food for Families Fund , California Firefighters' Memorial Fund, California Sea Otter Fund, California Youth Leadership Fund, School Supplies for Homeless Children Fund, Protect Our Coast and Oceans Fund, Rare and Endangered Species Preservation Program, California Breast Cancer Research Fund, Municipal Shelter Spay-Neuter Fund, California Cancer Research Fund, Keep Arts in Schools Fund, Alzheimer's Disease/Related Disorders Fund, State Children's Trust Fund for the Prevention of Child Abuse, Child Victims of Human Trafficking Fund, American Red Cross California Chapters Fund, State Parks Protection Fund/Parks Pass Purchase, California YMCA Youth and Government Fund, California Peace Officer Memorial Foundation Fund, and the California Seniors Special Fund.

The majority of these funds experienced a decline in donations in 2013. These organizations rely heavily on donations from the tax checkoff to continue their positive impact throughout the Golden State. For additional information visit: http://www.checkoffca.org.
