Farmers Market Finds: Sao Global Art

The colorful sweetgrass baskets from Senegal catch your eye.

This week find are the colorful hand-woven sweetgrass baskets from Sao Global Art at the Rancho Bernardo Farmers Market at the Bernardo Winery.

The eye-catching baskets from Senegal come in a variety of colors, though a beige and brown one is most popular, owner Omar Sao said.

The baskets, which come in different sizes, are good for holding laundry, fruit and—as one of Sao's sisters uses her small basket—for make-up, he said.

The baskets are made with sweetgrass and, to provide the color for certain designs, plastic strips woven through the grass.

The farmers market at the Bernardo Winery is open Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon.
