Grab & Go Kids Planner: Kites, Wizards and Crafternoons

Each week, we'll give you the lowdown on five great upcoming family activities or events.

If you suffered through the rain the past two weekends, take heart, dear souls. The sun is back again from March 3-6, and there's more than enough to do outdoors to make up for lost time.

Your choices, near Rancho Bernardo and in San Diego, include an opportunity to join in on a play, a regatta on the bay and a big day in Ocean Beach, where a new fair is taking place alongside the tried-and-true Kite Festival.

BEST BETS CLOSE TO HOME 

• Where/when: Poway Center for the Performing Arts, Poway, 4 p.m. Monday.

• Why Go: To give your theatrically inclined child a chance to show his or her stuff on stage, as the Missoula Children's Theatre holds auditions for a production of The Wizard of Oz.

• Price: Free.

• Where/when: San Diego County branch library,  4S Ranch, 4 p.m., Tuesday.

• Why Go: For "crafternoons," a monthly advanced class for kids and teens with more dexterity and skill. For sixth grade and up. 

• Price: Free, but must sign up.

BEST BETS, A LITTLE FARTHER OUT

• Where/when: San Diego Bay, San Diego, 11 a.m., Wednesday through Sunday.

• Why Go: To see sailors from around the world, including America's Cup winners, join in the RC-44 Championship Tour, named for the type of sailboat in which they'll be competing.

• Price: Free.

• Where/when: California Center for the Arts, Escondido, 4 and 7 p.m., Wednesday.

• Why Go: To hear Highland Way, a local Celtic band, free, as part of the center's Free First Wednesdays series.

• Price: Free.

• Where/when: Ocean Beach, San Diego, Saturday.

• Why Go: Make it a day on the beach with two big street fairs . The venerable  hits the Ocean Beach Recreation Center, for kite making and a parade, at 9 a.m. Then the newbie, , starts off at 11 a.m. with bands, skateboarding demos and an art fair.

• Price: Free.
