Key to Awesomeness:

Andrea Yu wanted to learn how to play the cello after her parents took her to an orchestra concert when she was a small child.

“I told my mom that I wanted to play it just because it was big and because my brother played the violin, and I wanted to have an instrument that was bigger than his,” the 17-year-old said.

Now 12 years later, the Mt. Carmel High School senior has become an accomplished musician and is passionate about music. In fact, Yu is a 2011 RB Chorale scholarship finalist. She will compete against other local graduating high school seniors during the chorale’s annual spring show on Friday.

"It feels great!" she said. "I’m totally honored to be one of the finalists."

Yu, who also knows how to play the piano, has been a cellist in the San Diego Youth Symphony and the Young Musicians Foundation. She also performs for patients at the Care With Dignity Convalescent Hospital.

In addition, Yu is the vice president of the French Club and the secretary of the National Honor Society club at her school.

After graduation, Yu plans to study music and business at the University of California, Los Angeles.

“I just hope that I will be happy with whatever I end up doing in 10 years, and hopefully, that will be enough to support me to live in this beautiful San Diego community,” she said.
