Twinkies Make Sweet—But Secret—Comeback in Rancho Bernardo

Twinkie demand is said to be at an all-time high, but where in Rancho Bernardo are the little cakes?

Twinkie demand is said to be at an all-time high, but where in Rancho Bernardo are the little cakes?

Hostess' signature treats made the "The Sweetest Comeback in the History of Ever" on Monday, returning to store shelves about eight months after production plants shut down amid labor disagreements and a search for new ownership.

So Patch, as a service to the community, made a quick round at some local grocery stores beginning Monday but has struggled to find many—if any—Twinkies, CupCakes and Donettes.

The Ralphs on Carmel Mountain Road had a display in the back of the store Monday, capturing the eye of one shopper who quickly snatched up a bag of donuts and put them in her cart while Patch was there.

But trips to other local grocery stores haven't been so sweet.

Hostess Brands said, despite maximum-level production, product sales are seven times higher than historic figures and orders are three to six times production amounts, according to the Associated Press.

The Twinkies also have been made lighter and smaller with a lower calorie count since they were last sold.

Have you been able to find any Hostess snacks at local grocery stores? What do you think of the smaller Twinkies?

Editor's Note: This story has been updated with the correct name of the store where the Twinkies were found.
