San Diego Seeks Citizen Volunteers to Help with City Work

Mayor Bob Filner announced a new site for locals to find volunteer opportunities within city departments.

The city of San Diego has a new web page for people to sign up for volunteer work in municipal departments, Mayor Bob Filner announced Monday.

The page—sandiego.gov/volunteer-programs—lists volunteer opportunities with eligibility requirements for each one. They're divided into Community Services, Internal Support and Public Safety sections.

An online application form is included, which asks for areas of interest and schedule availability, among other things.

Filner said that despite "wonderful employees," the city cannot run without its volunteers.

"We just don't have not only the resources and the numbers, but we don't have the passion, the dedication, the commitment, the personal attention that you all give," Filner said. "You help make us human, you make us more of a community, you make us more effective, you make us more real to everybody who lives in our city."

Filner handed out certificates to several volunteers, including one who has served for 30 years and others who have given 1,000 hours of their time.

Among the volunteer opportunities listed on the new web page are marshals for the Torrey Pines and Balboa Park golf courses, organizing library books, archival data entry and Community Emergency Response Team members.
