Community Corner

Serving the community this year

The RB Community Council, which is the oldest all volunteer organization in Rancho Bernardo, is looking forward to serving the community in 2014. The RB Community Council is ‘you voice in the community’, dealing with all the quality of life issues in Rancho Bernardo.  As such, the RB Community Council is an advocate for the health, safety, and well being of our residents.

The RB Community Council is pleased to inform everyone that we have been instrumental in bringing issues to the attention of our government leaders and they have listened to us.  One such matter we recently brought to the attention of Congressman Peters is the high cost of hearing aids, sometimes making them cost prohibitive to many of the residents in Rancho Bernardo.  Due to our research and persistence, Congressman Peters reviewed the matter and recently signed as a cosponsor the Hearing Aid Assistance Tax Credit, H.R. 1317.

In 2014 we will be addressing such matters as people abusing the system  by saying their dogs are service dogs.  We will again be working with Congressman Peters on this matter.  We will also be focusing our attention on the illegal rates charged by the Metropolitan Water District, and we are in the process of working on a state law requiring all schools to have AEDs.  We will be working with our state assembly member on this matter.

The RB Community Council will continue to reach out to our community in 2014 with presentations on senior scams and cyber bullying. We have done multiple presentations in the past on these two important matters which have helped educate parents, children, and other family members on how to be aware of these issues, and how to deal with them.

The RB Community Council will once again offer free CPR and AED training in 2014.  Over the past three years we have helped train approximately 700 residents of all ages on these two life saving skills.

Many matters the RB Community Council deals with, and will continue to deal with in 2014, dealt with ‘behind the scenes’.  These include working closely with Neighborhood Code Compliance in maintaining the quality of life in our community; working closely with the Transportation and Storm Water Department in keeping our streets safe and secure; graffiti control to help keep our community looking beautiful; and maintaining our medians. In terms of our medians, three of our medians on Pomerado Road are scheduled for new, drought tolerant landscape, and our welcome sign will be put in place this year.
